NANOG 67 Recap

Last we we attended NANOG 67 in Chicago. NANOG 67 took place from June 13-15, and offered a great opportunity to network with colleagues, freshen-up skills, learn advanced networking techniques, and discover new network applications.

NANOG also hosted a its first Hackathon on June 12. During the event, the participants developed new ideas and hacks for automating production internet networks.

During the conference, Carlos Vicente of Dyn Inc. talked about Kipper, their network automation project, and how it aims to align their network configuration lifecycle with the existing continuous integration model used for servers. Dyn has significantly expanded its coverage and recently added new features.

ARIN also provided some updates on recent trends now that it has depleted its supply of IPv4, including a black market due to the continuing need for the now out of stock IPv4 addresses.

Leslie Nobile, senior director of global registry knowledge at ARIN, said that cybercriminals are setting up shell companies and hijacking defunct IPv4 addresses, re-registering them and selling them to desperate companies. Nobile also talked about this in a 2004 presentation; what’s old is new again – and with IPv4 being a scarce resource, it was only a matter of time. Here is the full presentation:

Here are some additional highlights from the conference.

It was a pleasure meeting all of our new connections; we look forward to seeing you again at the next NANOG event!
